Tuesday, February 13th
“Mom… Mom… I hate to have to tell you this, but I have to go to the bathroom..”
and that’s how Mom’s day started, somewhere around 5:00am, this morning…. Even though their day started early, it sounds like it was a good day.
Every Tuesday, Kerrie and Mom will meet with the PT, OT and ST teams to discuss Kerrie’s progress and their meeting today went well. Kerrie has a long way to go, but the Teams all said Kerrie was doing well and they were happy with the little bit of progress she has shown in the past few days.
Speech Therapy gave her a good work out this morning and then came Physical Therapy. Kerrie’s getting ready for her tryout with the Rockettes! They had her standing and lifting her right leg. Mom said it was awesome to see, even though I’m sure she couldn’t lift it very high, she was able to lift her right leg off the ground several times.
When I talked to her tonight she sounded good and her speech was much easier to understand than it has been in the last few weeks. It definately sounds like Speech Therapy is doing her a little bit of good.
Mom told me they were talking about the nurses at Henry Ford, and Kerrie was able to remember some of them and some of the things they did. When Mom asked her if she remembered Giselle, and when Giselle would make her get out of bed and sit in a chair, Kerrie said, “Yes.. an hour is ok, but an hour and a half is TOO MUCH!” Giselle used to tell Kerrie she had to sit in the chair, whether she wanted to or not, and Kerrie would say, “O.K. But only for one hour. Only one hour.” Giselle would get her in the chair and “forget” to get her out of the chair for at least an hour and half …. so it was obvious Kerrie really did remember this 🙂
Mom has also seen signs, since yesterday, of Kerrie’s personality coming back.. she has started making wise crack comments and rolling her eyes at Mom when mom says something funny or says something ridiculous.
I started to see a few signs of “Kerrie” on Sunday night, when I was getting ready to head back to Ohio. I was saying goodbye to her, and the song”Memory”, from the Musical “Cats”, was on the TV. Mom asked her if she remembered the musical, and what it was, and all I could think about was when Kerrie would sing this song, and how beautiful her voice was. I started to cry, and Kerrie put her hand on my face, to wipe away the tears, and said “no.. no..no tears.. no crying.”… and then blew me kisses, over and over again, as I walked out the door.
So.. right about now we are getting back to where we were somewhere right before Christmas. Hopefully, Kerrie will keep improving and we can get back to where we were up to the point where we had to take her back to Henry Ford.
Maybe by the time I come back from my recruiting trip Kerrie will have started her own dance troop on the PT floor. They can all dress in sequins and lift their legs a couple of inches of the ground.. all set to music 🙂
